Whoever said ‘Diamonds are a girl’s bestfriend!” – thank you very much Miss Munroe – clearly did not understand men’s fascination with all things beautiful and lusty. On my part, i am a comunate gem and fine jewellery enthusiast, so much so that I possess a jewellery collection to rival both my mother and five sisters. So when I heard of Duncan Steven, and beheld his objets d’art, he immediately gained a client and avid supporter.
Mr. Stevens is a young and up-and-coming South african jewellery designer whose imagination and aptitute I believe will secure him a prominent seat amongst great local jewellers. He creates few pieces – mostly bespoke – that will look good on whoever wears, and in the future – I predict – will be considered great investment items.
Handcrafted in 18 carat Yellow Gold, the Volcano Ring is a remarkable statement piece. The chunky but mesmerising object d’art weighs in at a considerable 40g, and its band is marked by a highly textured side and polished underside, creating a vivid contrast. The Volcano Ring’s ‘lavar’ is a pear shaped Smokey Quartz, itself weighing a sizeable 19.81 carats, and is skilfully set sunken and inverted in the Volcano. Now there are both aesthetic and functional benefits to this unique setting method, the latter being that the surrounding metal protects the amber stone from damage. Consistent with the volcano theme, Duncan’s ring’s interior encasing is so pilished that it reflects light back into the gemstone, effecting, as the amber Quartz rises out of the heart of the ring, what looks like whisps of smoke and tongues of fire. A truly perfect concept and wearable art.
Duncan Stevens’ pieces or any commissions are available only by private appointment, ensureing a truly bespoke service and objet d’art.
